Position Analysis: The Linebackers

Part 8 of my analysis of the Eagles, position by position, focuses on a group that has done a 180-degree turn from 12 months ago. The linebackers were a collective question mark at this time a year ago. Now they are as promising a group as the Eagles have had at any position in a long, long time.

By overhauling the group after the 2006 campaign, the Eagles entered 2007 with a bunch of pieces that needed a lot of the right things to happen to become a puzzle. First, the team acquired Takeo Spikes in a trade with Buffalo, and then waited to see how the picture would sort out before assigning him a definitive position. Then the team used a third-round pick on Stewart Bradley, a strong-side linebacker at Nebraska who also had experience and the physical attributes to play in the middle. Dhani Jones, the team's starter at SAM in the three previous seasons, was released. Jeremiah Trotter, a leader on the team and a Pro Bowl player, was waived midway through training camp.

As the Eagles entered the season, Omar Gaither, a second-year player who started in December of 2006 and in the post-season that year at WILL, moved to the middle as the full-time starter. Spikes was entrenched as a starter at WILL. And Chris Gocong, a third-round pick in 2006 who spent all of that season on injured reserve, made strides every day as the SAM linebacker. Pago Togafau was acquired off of waivers days before the opener in Green Bay, another prospect to consider.

As each week progressed, then, the linebackers made progress. Gaither was a tackling machine in the middle. Spikes solidified the run defense and took away some of the short passes that hurt the defense in the past. Gocong was a physical presence against the run and a developing player in passing situations, both in coverage and when he was called on to rush the quarterback.

Still, the molding was not complete. Matt McCoy was waived during the season, ending his brief and disappointing time in Philadelphia after the Eagles drafted him in the second round in 2005. Akeem Jordan, impressive in the preseason after signing with the team as a non-drafted rookie, was called up from the practice squad for a look-see.

As the Eagles came down the stretch run, in the final half of the season and then in the final month, the linebackers led the way for the defense. Spikes was solid, and would have been spectacular had he made some plays on which he had his hands on the football and failed to hold on. Gaither was around the ball all season. Gocong was simply outstanding against the run and then advanced as a pass-rushing threat off the edge in certain situations.

Spikes missed the final two games of the year after suffering a shoulder injury in the win over Dallas, and Bradley became the starter. He wowed everybody with six tackles, a quarterback sack and a forced fumble in the game and helped the Eagles stifle a high-powered New Orleans offense during a memorable goal-line stand.

Bradley also played some MIKE in the game as Gaither went down with an injury and Jordan came in and played the weak side, making a total of five tackles and fitting in very well.

Both Bradley and Jordan continued their strong play in the finale against Buffalo, supplementing a terrific defensive effort and the Eagles went into the offseason feeling that they had a lot to work with at each of the three linebacker position in the near future.

Now? The high expectations and tremendous optimism remain. What remains to be seen is how Jim Johnson plans on putting it all together. With new linebackers coach Bill Shuey working with the group -- Sean McDermott moved to the secondary -- the Eagles are likely to consider a lot of options moving forward. Spikes is expected to be healthy as he continues to rehab his shoulder. He should step right back into the WILL spot.

Then again ...

There are questions about middle linebacker and SAM. Does Gaither stay in the middle, or do the Eagles turn it over to Bradley, who has more bulk and who proved to blitz very effectively as a rookie? Will Gocong stay on the strong side and continue his transformation from a small-college defensive end to NFL linebacker? Or do the Eagles move Gocong around and use him off the edge at times to help the pass rush in nickel situations?

What about Jordan? He is a core member of the special teams, true, but Jordan exhibits excellent athletic ability and instincts -- as well as the skills to make plays -- and will provide competition in the spring and summer. Hey, Spikes has the ability to play all three linebacker positions, so who is to say he wouldn't end up on the strong side?

Johnson has options here and he has one of the more talented groups of linebackers to come along in many years here. Maybe Johnson just mixes and matches -- by the way, Togafau is a complete unknown to me at this point, so I have to consider him a dar khorse across the board -- and figures things out on a possession-by-possession basis. He can give quarterbacks a lot of different looks with so much young talent and a bunch of players who provide different looks.

It is, no doubt, an exciting proposition. The Eagles ripped things apart at linebacker 12 months ago. They did it right. The next step is to make this group something special, and that is what Johnson intends to do.

Moses.. W/ya also. Don't need another LB. We got plenty. More TO's is the key. JJ couldn't blitz between the 20's like he normally does because of injuries. Lito, #20, Considine and the young #96 and Gocong. You just can't dog CB's and OLB's w/JR Smith and Paschal at S. We're gonna get more TO's w/#20, Mikell at SS and Lito back. So I'm not worried about TO's. We'll be much better as far as TO's with another year.

Brizer... I'm w/ya on Spikes. Gotta be back. Can't replace experience. And like you said... Somebody's gonna get hurt. Not for long God willing. And Spikes can play em all. Flexability is key in NFL on D nowdays. And Gocong, Gaither, Bradley, Spikes can all play multiple spots. Including Gocong at DE in positive pass.

All's I gotta say is that I like Omar Gaither, Gocong, and the veteran leadership of Takeo Spikes for 2008. I believe that after Gaither and Gocong played as full time starters, they will play at a higher level this coming season. That's what we need is some young speedy line backers who can stop the run instantly, drop back in excellent zone coverage, rush the QB to get the ball out of his hands quickly, and most importantly PRODUCE MORE TURNOVERS! I believe that our young linebacking core will step up and play well in 2008. So I really don't think we need to draft another linebacker or acquire one in free agency. Work with the linebackers we have now and don't waste money bringing in somebody new who maybe a dissapointment.

O yeah... Our LB's are great. Gocong is great against run... but the cover skills at times seemed, well... bad. Could be wrong bout him on the pass. But this I do know. Spikes can play anywhere. Gaither can really cover. And Bradley is quick on the attack. Both dog and react. Plus he's 250 and can run. One thing I don't like bout Gaither is he's small doggin or playin bubble. Trotter used to give people fits playin bubble right between the DT's over the C. Remeber all the times Trot would a** plant the C and dive over the RB at the QB. He was awesome! Anyways, Bradley seems like the guy to me at MLB. So maybe if Gocong doesn't get better... Spikes at SLB. Bradley at MLB. Gaither at WLB. That could be great. But, however they decide to line up... we are much younger and better than the days of SLB DJones and WLB musical chairs.

Good news and Bad news about trip to Vegas. I sat next to Pelini all right... Carl Pelini. Next to him was Stoops. Mike Stoops. Then a bunch of wives and whathaveyou then Bo and Bob. So I didn't get to chance to chat bout them becoming EAGLE scouts. They seemed like very nice people. And you could tell the Pelini's and Stoop's have been good friends long time. I got there late, of course. Bout halfway through last undercard. But Pelini and I chat about DE's that he coaches. He said DE Josh Williams a Frosh recruit from Denton, Texas willbe great. So I'm pushin EAGLE'S too draft him 1st Rd. in 2013... It's going to take me a month to get my head right. I almost got into a fight with a guy dressed like a girl. Don't know if that goes under Good/Bad? Then I got arrested for getting into a fight with some fellow they wouldn't put with the rest of us jailbirds, due to his GANG affiliation. As we threw blows his gun fell out and before either of us could go for it, some crackhead girl on the Strip picked it up and ran off. I finished that fight getting punched and laughin hysterically. He might of been a punk, butI wouldn't think they would let a punk in a GANG? Anyways... had there been an award for most inebriated, I would have at least placed. The arresting officer liked me and told the jailers to give me a walk through. Which means they take your money out of your wallet, and let you out in bout 4 hours, I guess... Cause that's what happened. I only got to play Blackjack for about 4 hours(Thank Jesus) and oddly enough only lost bout $800. Did better than a man in a white fur coat that split 2's every time he got em? Couldn't fugure out if he tryin to be funny or hated money? Vegas is a fine city. Hope I never go back.

Well... Pavlik won. Did anyone see the fight? You got to give it to Taylor... He's got quick hands! And he put up with Pavlik's pressure pretty well. He ran when needed and held when needed. He used his left hook alot more this time around. He's still great fighter. And he beat Hopkins. So that's all I need to know. When they exchanged at the bell to end the fight... I remember thinkin Pavlik had won(Not including a Mob-fixed scorecard, i.e. Lewis/ Holyfield) but a small part of me hoped for a draw just so there would be a 3rd fight. Small part indeed. I love Pavlik and when he fights "Tito"... even if it's in Pakistan... I'll go.

I said this before,..these 5-6 LBs have the POTENTIAL to be the best in IGS history. With that said, it will JJ and the players to bury their egos and mend their talents. I believe Spikes should stay (he is $$$) for two reasons. You can't replace his eperience and chances are,,,somebody will get hurt.I'm not willing to take that chance. I would only go for a "steal" no earlier than the second round,..MAYBE.

I think that it's sad that Big Blue doesn't have anything positive to do with his life and comes here exposing us to his negative perspective on things. Relax man, I am glad you won the superbowl because you beat the only team that I hate more than the G-men. Now, with that said... I have seen a lot of Eagles seasons and I have to say that I was impressed with the LB core this past year. They were fierce. I would have like to see more turnovers by the whole defense but I know that you cannot have everything all the time. The pieces that JJ has to work with is excellent. I know Bradley and some of the younger LBs are coming along and deserve a shot at a starting position but, Gocong, Gaither, and Spikes are my starters. I think that after playing a whole year together, they are ready to progress to the next stage of their game. They understand how each other react to plays and, with JJ's play-calling, will be a tremendous force going into next season. I know it's difficult to say whether we would add another LB to the roster but I would say that we are set at the position unless a true stud arises and he isn't that costly. Well, I don't have anything further to add to the LB conversation other than I hope that everyone gets healthy in the offseason and works to improve their performance on the field. Looking forward to the CB analysis. Thanks for keeping us informed and interested in Eagles news during the offseason Dave... Melvin Chicago, IL
