Head coach Andy Reid hinted at the end of the June OTAs that roster moves were on the horizon and the Eagles wasted no time releasing nine players and agreeing to terms with veteran defensive tackle Kimo von Oelhoffen on a one-year deal Friday.
Unlike past seasons where the Eagles had NFL Europe roster exemptions for training camp, the Eagles had to get down to the NFL roster limit of 80 after carrying 88 in the OTAs. The Eagles' roster now stands at 80 players. Friday the 13th was not kind to defensive tackle LaJuan Ramsey, a sixth-round draft pick in 2006 who surprised coaches in his first training camp. In his two seasons with the Eagles, Ramsey played in 15 games and registered 18 tackles plus an interception against future Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre.
Also cut were cornerback Tanard Davis, a late-season pickup in 2007, defensive tackle Jeremy Clark and defensive end Xzavie Jackson, who were both on the practice squad last season. The other five players released were all rookie free agents: linebacker Gary Butler, wide receiver Terrell Golden, quarterback Casey Hansen, defensive end A.J. Schable and linebacker Markell Staffieri.
The 6-4, 299-pound von Oelhoffen spent last season with the Eagles after being released by the New York Jets following training camp. The 15-year veteran played in eight games (one start) and recorded four tackles. A stout run stopper, the 37-year-old von Oelhoffen has recorded 399 tackles, 26.5 sacks, three forced fumbled and seven fumble recoveries. In 2003, von Oelhoffen had 40 tackles and eight sacks with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Two years later, he won a Super Bowl with the Steelers.
A sixth-round selection of Cincinnati in 1994, von Oelhoffen has also played for the Bengals (1994-99), the Pittsburgh Steelers (2000-05) and the New York Jets (2006). A native of Kaunakakai, Hawaii, von Oelhoffen began his college career at the University of Hawaii in 1990, but transferred to Walla Walla (WA) J.C. in 1991, and then to Boise State in 1992.

Sorry, gotta adjust for the censorship. Won't happen again. Well, it probably will. I have much hostility.

Hopefully Kimo pummels Romo and Eli the way he did Carson Palmer when he shattered his knee. This guy could be on the hunt for Andy just like he was for Cowher, taking Giants, Skins, and Cowgirls out with potential career ending injuries left and right. That is until his old a** gets one himself. I do hope that's not the case though. Eli's a ****, Romo's garbage. I'm out.

I want to see him actually play at the pro-level before I form an opinion about him. Thats called logic. Tell me if the big-words scare you, smart-guy.

Shaheer McBride?
Are you serious...Who out there thinks Shaheer McBride is the Eagles future #1 WR?

Reid offered Randy Moss all that money because Moss is the best reciever in the league. He does everything. gaudy stats in every category. Chad Johnson? Good yardage. Big plays. Lousy in the redzone. Lacks the size to get open in tight spaces. Moss is 6'3 and the best jumper in the league. Chad is Reggie Brown's size. Look it up. As for Lito . . . the front office tried to sell him. Didnt work. And Lito is far more valuable than Chad. Lito gives us the most dangerous secondary in the league. He also conducts himself like an adult. The only "distraction" would be media specualation about what he "really wants" and that would only double if we got Chad Johnson or any flamboyant reciever. Every time we lose, the media will take every facial expression and turn it into a story. Reggie Brown was a #1 reciever prior to last year. Couldnt get you clowns to shut up about him. He had a speedbump in his 3rd year instead of his 1st or 2nd. I think he's gonna pull it together this year. But a big, red-zone threat would be nice . . . Shaheer Mcbride, show me whatcha got.

lancegreenz@... 06/14/08 6:05 pm ET |
Lito is going to be a distraction all year...Eagles need to trade him NOW! Reggie Brown is not a #1 WR. Kevin Curtis is a solid Wes Welker type. Are you all forgetting that Reid offered RANDY MOSS more money that the Patriots? RANDY MOSS is a trouble maker...a ME-ME guy and Reid still make the offer. How quickly we forget. I don't like Chad Johnson and think he should just play ball...but if he is available and the EAGLES certainly have a need...Let's get him.

lancegreenz@... 06/14/08 5:11 pm ET |
I was referring to REGGIE Brown, not Sheldon Brown...I thought that was obvious. Get Chad Johnson for REGGIE Brown, Lito(no show)Sheppard (not a German Sheppard) and 2 crappy draft picks. Chad Johnson had 8 TDs last season, not 3. And let's watch the name calling, guys. Or I will call your Mommy and I do know her quite well.

I'm a big Chad Johnson fan, but he doesnt fit our current need at wide reciever. He doesnt. We dont need another reciever to stretch the field. We dont need a reciever that has been playing against zone coverage in a predominantly bump-and-run division. If Anquin Boldin or Roy Williams or even Matt Jones or Earnest Wilford became available, any one of them could step in and contribute better than Chad. His numbers in the redzone just arent good enough to warrant a major trade. I actually would prefer that Shaheer Mcbride turns into a redzone machine and pushes Avant for a spot. IF Chad even plays this year, he will very likely not play as a starter. T.J. got more looks last year because he was getting open more than Chad. Simpson (Bengals 1st pick) can go up and make the grab just as well as Chad (he literally leap-frogged over 2 d-backs, both of them standing up!). Chad is on the decline. He would be much more useful on a team with a bunch of big guys in need of the vertical threat. Not with the eagles.

The last thing the Eagles need is Chad "me first" Johson and his "look at me, I've gotta be the center of attention" antics. Kimo was brought back for one thing, goal line and short yardage situations. Good role player to have.

We Got to Get a number one reciever. A lot of people are Chad Johnson to kevin curtis. Chad had 8tds and Kevin had 6tds. But We Still should go after chad by giving away draft pics not Lito. Chad didn't not have a great season because TJ got the ball more than Chad. When TJ wasn't a starter Chad was the main guy. If Chad comes to Philly he will be the main guy and im not taking anything away from Kevin Curtis.
There is also another situation going on with the New York Giants. Plaxico Burress wants a new deal and if we have enough money i say we go after him.His situation is not as big as Chads but if gets worse i say we take avantage of that. I look at his stats last year and he scored like almost everygame Plaxico scored 12 touchdowns last year which is double of Curtis touchdowns. Cmon coaches of the Eagles we really need a number one reciever.
If we get a number one reciever we will be so feared next year. Cause now we have two Westbrooks.Curtis,DeSean and a number one reciever in catching.A healthy LJ, A good offensive line.We would be mad sick. Also if DeSean isn't ready to feel in the job we can put Curtis in the slot.Like the Patriots did with Wes Walker. Then we can get Reggie Brown as the outside reciever with a number one reciever. NEXt year we have so much speed even if we don't get the number one reciever.
Also i have one more reciever i like. Roy Williams from Detroit Lions. I don't know if he got resigned or not but this guy is amazing. He is still young so we can have him for a long time. Eventhough he had only 5 tds. This guy is a play maker. He made it to the pro bowl as a alternate.
BUT The person that Philly Fans what to see come to philly is CHAD JOHNSON!!!!!!!!!!!!!. We have to make sure we don't let him get upset like T.O. But he is really worth it. I Say we bring out chad. When McNabb has a number one reciever we go to the Superbowl and u Know that is true. So Lets bring in Chad and go back to the Superbowl.

Actually we still need a #1 reciever.Look at our defense with adding Asante Samuel amazing were done with defense.Look at Special Teams getting DeSean Jackson. Now look what we did on offense yeah we got Lorenzo Booker which will be good what are doing with the recievers nothing.Look Kevin Curtis was so amazing last year he can be a #2 reciever.Look Brian Westbrook had more recieving touchdowns than reggie Brown that is crazy. I no do with westbrook with the passing game but he is a running back.Reggie Brown is not to impressive. What i want to see the Eagles do real soon is to get a number one reciever, have Curtis as a number 2 reciever, and have DeSean Jackson in the slot.

we do not need a #1 receiver. that season with TO, we did have one of the easiest schedules in the league. we crushd the vikings and falcons without TO on our way to the superbowl. last season, was it getting a first down that hurted us? no retards, it was redzone offense. we had no problem getting to the redzone.
|
billydsp@... 06/14/08 1:08 pm ET |
Boy it's a good thing lancegreenz isn't making personnel decisions...2 first round picks and 2 pro bowl corners for 1 receiver? What are you smoking?
I don't care how good the receiver is, that's a terrible deal for the Eagles.
|
Nuuuudlz 06/14/08 12:51 pm ET |
okay okay . . . 8 touchdowns. Not 3. 8. Better. But still not enough. If we go after a reciever, it will be a redzone specialist. Not another field stretcher. As far as speed goes . . . Curtis runs a 4.3. Chad runs a 4.3. So yes, I am comparing a small, 1st year wideout with a small, 8th year wideout, separated by 2 recieving touchdowns. Personally, I prefer the wideout that makes the bigplay on the looseball and has an opportunity to face more one on one matchups than he had last year. Both Curtis and Brown are going to have less coverage because of Booker and (cross your fingers) Kris Wilson. Our tight ends and Running backs (maybe even our new fullback) will tie up the linebackers and the safeties, freeing up our recievers. The Westcoast offense is gonna look real perdy this year.
|
Nuuuudlz 06/14/08 12:20 pm ET |
I may be blind, but . . . 3 touchdowns last season? Not impressed. Take your **** hat off for a moment and think clearly, will you? Chad is in the 30+ club. He is small, so once you wrap him up he's down. He's faking an ankle injury or he actually has an injury, making for attitude and durability issues. And he would not respond very well to an offense that will highlight Westbrook instead of him. You dont give up 2 first round picks, a starting reciever, and an elite cornerback for a 30 year old crybaby, dumb@ss. Not when your reciever is still developing and has as much potential as Brown does. Not when Sheldon is coming off of arguably his best season and adds so much against the run and the pass from the nickel. Not when we will need those 1st rounders to address our O-line and very likely our safety position. We didnt go to the superbowl because of T.O. We went because we had the easiest schedule in the league and Mcnabb in prime form. Even if T.O. was the main reason we went to the big game . . . Chad is not T.O. End of story.

dandaman8834...I am with you 100%
Chad Johnson is the missing piece...just like TO in 2004. A blind man could see that! The Eagles could get Ocho-Cinco if they sweeten the pot. The Redskins offer was close...Eagles need to up the ante. I would offer Sheppard, Brown, the Eagles 2009 first round pick (since they will just trade it anyway) and the 2009 Carolina Panthers first round pick. Done. We get rid of Sheppard's bad vibe and we get one more magical season like we did in 2004. Who's on board?

dandaman8834 06/14/08 11:33 am ET |
Nuuuudlz...you obviously have no idea what you are talking about. Chad Johnson is one of the most elite receivers in the game today. Just look at the stats, they don't lie. His ability to go across the middle, his speed, and his jumping ability is unmatched. He would provide that true number 1 receiver that we are desperately searching for, and would put this team over the top. And are you seriously comparing Chad Johnson to Kevin Curtis and Reggie Brown??? Please. He would also run circles around Marques Colston and Vincent Jackson. Get real.
|
Nuuuudlz 06/14/08 9:06 am ET |
can someone honestly explain what Chad Johnson could possibly bring to this team? Seriously. The guy is only maybe 6ft. He is fast. So is Curtis, Reggie, and Desean. He doesnt have reliable hands. I know he's a playmaker. But he's not the kind of playmaker that would put this offense over the top. Roy Williams would. Anquin Boldin would. Colston or Vincent Jackston would. Not Chad.
|
msg329@... 06/14/08 12:51 am ET |
honestly, yes. I think they would be willing to go through it. This team only has 2 or 3 more years to get back to the SB and if Ocho Cinco can get them the trophy then even if the team suffers the fans won't care. Super bowl wins are a lot more meaningful than any player gripes any day of the week. Also unlike T.O. Chad is a lot more loyal to his team then T.O. was. If you haven't noticed, the only thing C.J. did was ask for more play makers. He never once insulted his teammates unlike that Roid head in the cowgirl outfit

billydsp@... 06/13/08 11:30 pm ET |
balln023 you are honestly the dumbest person ever. do you really think the eagles would be willing to sign chad johnson after what they went through with t.o?
|
balln023@... 06/13/08 6:52 pm ET |
I like this move but we still need a big time wide out and i think Chad Johnson is that guy.
|
Eagles4893@... 06/13/08 5:25 pm ET |
ibrokethesun, you have no idea what you are talking about. First of all we don't have problems in short yard situations because last year we had one of the best red zone defenses in the NFL, and last time i checked thats short yardage, and also he did not play on the steel curtain, that was in the 70's, also we have no need to bring back a player who had 4 tackles, and is one of the oldest players in the NFL. Also Dan Klecko wouldn't be a bad mentor either, so Kimo is an unneeded player and will most likley be cut after the next roster cut diwn as he should be.

Great moves on da "D" side of da ball but let's see more "O" moves.Don't be afraid to go after some of those unhappy players out there.

I love the way the Eagles are moving. Lots of competetition in the trenches. Hopefully they'll be a tougher team right out of the starting gate this year and not a struggling 500 team going into the bye week. With Dallas up close and personal in the second game of the season wouldn't it be nice to be 2-0 to start the season off!
