| Players Impressed With New Home March 7, 2001 By Bob Kent For a rare night, the Eagles players were not in the spotlight. Instead, they were overshadowed by their new home-away-from-home, the palace that is the NovaCare Complex. Speaking during the facility's groundbreaking more than a year ago, team owner Jeffrey Lurie said he had visions of a first-class, first-rate practice facility. That dream became a reality Wednesday night at the official grand opening. And the players, who have a dream of their own… a Super Bowl Championship, gave rave reviews to their new nest. ""It's definitely something you want to be a part of,"" said linebacker Jeremiah Trotter, one of several Eagles players in attendance for the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and festivities. ""The Eagles are getting off to something great here and I definitely want to be a part of it."" Gone are the days of partitioned-off meeting rooms and a closet-sized weight room. And that's one room Trotter hopes to be spending a great deal of time in, the 8,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art weight room that looks out over the practice fields. ""I love to lift weights and work out,"" said Trotter. ""It's definitely eye-opening. It's big."" Speaking of big, mammoth 6-7, 330-pound tackle Jon Runyan was certainly impressed. ""It's a lot more than what I expected,"" said Runyan, who signed a six-year deal with the club on Feb. 14, 2000, the day the organization broke ground for the complex. ""The weight room is awesome. You love being in there now, it's not back in a closet."" For now, though, Runyan has been living in the training room working to rehab his ankle, which he had surgery on in the off-season. Wideout Charles Johnson visited the complex nearly three weeks ago, and was still in awe as he stood outside the massive pillars at the front entrance. ""I was in awe,"" said Johnson. ""It's one thing to go to work, but it's another to got to work in a place like this, with so much excitement involved. ""I was impressed with the meeting rooms, and the weight room is unbelievable."" As for a favorite room, Johnson said unequivocally, the locker room. ""That locker room is something special,"" said Johnson. ""It's the real deal."" A player's lounge that adjoins the locker room is another room Johnson plans to spend some time relaxing with his teammates, playing ping-pong and dominos with his teammates. ""Now we don't have to take up one of [head athletic trainer] Rick's [Burkholder] tables for dominos,"" quipped Johnson. If the NovaCare Complex is any indicator of what the future holds for the Eagles, then greater rewards are sure to be ahead. |
